The Nurse ran to get the Doctor and Terry looked pleadingly at him grabbing for his hands again. She looked up into his eyes and prayed silently.
The events pass quickly and before they know it there is the cry of a small voice. Theresa whimpers and holds her arms out for the baby, looking nervously around the room as the small bundle is taken from them and cleaned up and swaddled. The nurse brings the tiny little one back to them and places her in Terry’s hands. “Say hello to your daughter”
Terry gives a silent cry of relief tears streaming down her face. A daughter, not a clone, not a repeat of the horrid events of years before. She looked up at Jamie relief shining in her eyes. “a girl ” she mouths to him.
As the nurse takes the baby back to do some last minute checks she grabbed Jamie down to her and kissed him deeply. Whispering as loudly as she can, spray still in effect “And I’ve always been stronger then ye boyo” her eyes where shinning with tears as the nurse returns a few minutes later. “Does Daddy want to hold her?”
Jamie smiled as he watched the birth of his first daughter, his only true child, before he inwardly gagged. Heh.. well no one really prepares you for that, do they? Damn it Jamie.. you’ve seen people dying, explosions that almost take off your head.. and yet you’re disgusted by this? You suck. Jamie! Focus!
The few seconds of daze were over as he resumed his smiling, his eyes glistening as he held back tears of joy. He watched the mother of his child press the newborn close to her, watched the tears of joy flow down her alabaster cheeks and he was surprised to feel something he hadn’t felt in a long time: happy. He nodded at her as she mouthed “a girl”, and he looked at the nurse take away his daughter. In a flash he found himself being pulled forward by a strength he knew so well and his lips found hers. He grinned as he opened his eyes, hearing the small statement that she whispered. “That is true.. and my fingers that poke out at odd angles can prove it..”
As he heard the nurse, he nodded wordlessly. He picked up the bundle of joy that Terry had brought into this world and he could only smile, he had no words. He gently made a cooing sound at the young creature, extending his index finger and positively melting as she grasped it reflexively. “Hiya Joannie.. welcome to the family.” The moment was suddenly perfect, and that day passed by quickly and happily.
It was suddenly three days later and they were back at the house/office, him holding onto Joannie as his wife made them pancakes. “You know.. I love you girls more than I thought I ever could love.. and remember that love-struck dupe? Yeah, he’s inside there somewhere.” He joked aloud, his eyes never leaving the form of his newborn daughter.
She smirked over at him still feeling a little sore and swollen, but just unable to separate the pair. “Iffen ye truly loved me you’d be the one makin’ the pancakes.” she teased him a bit as she set a stack in front of him. “Powdered sugar, brown sugar or syrup love.” she kissed the top of his head “an Joanie is two young t’ behaving them.”
Moving around the kitchen she poured herself a large glass of orange juice and sat down gently taking the baby from him. Terry laughed just a bit at the hurt look on his face. “That lovesick dupe?” She adjusted her daughter and leaned over and kissed him. “Funny all this time thought that was the origination who felt like that fer me.”
Terry hummed softly as she sat back in the chair slipping out of the nursing bra and beginning to feed. “Somebody takes after their Da, she’s very hungry today. ” She looked over at her husband and smiled softly. “Love you too, so much.”
